When Sharon comes out to play

    Newbridge Locals

In a tiny little town just 20 minutes out of Bendigo, but a million miles from anywhere, lives Shane and Sharon, with their housemate, Lenny.

Shane’s a top bloke. Loves cars, talks about his dog, ‘barge arse’ and chops wood for his ageing neighbours. Sharon gets out there splitting logs too. In fact, Sharon has done most of the work around the yard, including building the fences.

Over at the General Store they reckon Shane and Sharon are alright. Though, as one of the elderly locals noted, you never ever see ‘em together. Must be real busy, those two.

I spent the morning with Shane and Lenny, out on the back verandah, watching as Shane transformed into the sassy, quick-witted Shazza.

“Is it tough being trans and living here?” I wondered. “Nah, mostly people are cool.” Sharon replies. “We do a lot of good things to help people around town. I don’t hide, I’m always completely open and honest with them. If someone doesn’t like it, I can usually cut them down to size with my tongue. If they wanna get physical, oh well… don’t you worry about me.”

Lenny chimes in, “Shane’s an ex-boxer. Look, people love Shane, he’s bloody great. But when Sharon comes out, that’s when the fun really starts.”

I shot this with an octabox and a Godox mono block. So it was quick to pack up. It was a hot morning, Lenny was getting impatiently thirsty.

With that, Sharon took us both over the road to the pub. Priceless.
