    SBS: We'll go there

A cheeky little shot for SBS

This was a ‘behind the scenes’ shot taken to PR SBS’ new brand campaign TVC. The ad features a streaker who jogs through various SBS shows and films to show you the kind of stuff you'll only see on SBS. Nudity, for example.

I like this shot partly because of the weather on the day being so windy, which mean't these big blobs of cloud were tumbling chaotically across the sky. The whole scene looked quite surreal. The bare, featureless landscape (a sand mine in Kurnell), swirling Van Gogh clouds and a lone, naked man writing notes in the middle of it all. It's got a pinch of Magritte, a dash of Dali, and maybe just a little Geoffrey Smart about it. Or perhaps that's just me getting carried away with art references?

Compositionally, I was able to get a low enough camera angle to bring most of the subject above the horizon line. This makes the subject quite heroic, and cuts out any potential interference from surrounding visual clutter. And the art director in me likes all that clear space (minus a few clouds if need be) to run a headline.

Shooting stills on a TVC set is always tricky because of fitting in with the production company shoot schedule.

Add to that the crazy light on the day which, with the strong winds, was rapidly switching between scorching midday sun to flat and cloudy. I had to light for both situations to be ready when the talent arrived. Luckily, the sun was out and served as our key light, with the flash as fill.

Then, at the request of the intimacy coordinator, a bit of last minute wrangling of cars to make a privacy screen either side of our set before the talent removed his gown.

Shoot, shoot, shoot. Roll video, (had to shoot some BTS clips too), and you’re out of there and done.

You gotta go faster than a streaker at the cricket.
